The Steeplechase Cancer Center at Somerset Medical Center, which opened in January 2007, enables Central New Jersey cancer patients to see their doctors, undergo outpatient treatment and participate in promising cancer research studies – all in one place close to home. The $28 million three-story, 63,000-square-foot outpatient facility houses the sanofi-aventis Breast Care Program, radiation oncology services, the medical center’s research team, oncologists’ offices, a resource library, nutritional counseling and complementary medicine services.
The Steeplechase Cancer Center takes a team approach to cancer care, bringing together medical professionals from various specialties to work together to ensure the best care for patients. The center features the most state-of-the-art technologies, including the latest-generation linear accelerator, which uses high-energy X-rays to target and destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue, and digital mammography equipment, which will enhance breast cancer detection.

Designed to promote an atmosphere of healing, the lobby of the center has the feel of a Vermont ski lodge, with a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace as its focal point. An outdoor healing garden along the building’s south side is visible from treatment areas, offering a sense of peace and serenity. Complementary medicine services, such as massage, meditation, reiki, yoga and tai chi, also help patients and their family members relieve the stress of their cancer treatments.

If inpatient care is needed, patients will be cared for by their same physicians at the medical center, which is connected to the cancer center via an enclosed above-ground walkway.

The Steeplechase Cancer Center was named in honor of the Far Hills Race Meeting, one of the most prestigious steeplechase horse races in the country that is held each October at Moorland Farms, which has donated more than $16 million to the medical center through Somerset Medical Center Foundation over the past 52 years.
