Breast Cancer Research

Program Leaders: Michael Reiss, M.D. and Deborah L. Toppmeyer, M.D.

Overall Goals: to identify populations or individuals at high risk, by discovering the mechanisms underlying the etiology and progression of disease, by identifying new approaches to prevention, treatment and molecular determinants of response and by disseminating critically important information to communities throughout the state.

Specific Goals:

  • Identify genetic alterations that predispose to breast cancer and target cancer control measures to individuals at risk.
  • Characterize biological mechanisms of breast cancer development and progression.
  • Develop novel targeted treatment strategies and validate key determinants of response to therapy.
  • Significant progress has been made in developing powerful genetic tools for the identification of populations at risk and genetic alterations that occur during breast cancer development.
